Tommy grew up in Atlanta, and when he started playing music he counted Buddy Holly as an influence.  A few years later Tommy, like Bobby Vee, got his break filling in for Buddy. A year later, he had his first hit with Sheila. written for his girlfriend, who wasn’t named Sheila, but we’ll let him explain.

In 1963, he toured England with a then-unknown British group as the opening act – The Beatles. They weren’t unknown for long, and when they toured the U.S. the following year, Tommy opened for them at their first U.S. concert. His last Top 40 single was in 1969, but continued touring until his retirement in 2018. Make that semi-retirement.
