Rufus Thomas started his show business career as a Frog in a school play. That career spanned eight decades and included stints as a vaudeville performer, tap dancer, comedian and host of a Beale Street Revue. But he’s best known as the Singer/songwriter responsible for hit records, including “The Dog”, “Walking the Dog”, “Can your Monkey do the Dog”, “Do the Funky Chicken” and “Do The Funky Penguin”, which he performed in a penguin Costume. He was also a disc jockey at the groundbreaking Memphis radio station, WDIA, the first black- programmed station in the U.S., and one of the first Deejays with an audience of both black and white teenagers. We recorded this interview with Rufus at WDIA shortly before his death in 2001.
