Not the first name that comes to mind when you’re thinking of rock stars, but Pat Boone was the second-biggest charting artist of the late 50’s, behind Elvis. He had his first big hit, “Ain’t That A Shame”, a Fats Domino cover, in 1955. A college English major at the time, Pat wanted to change the lyrics to “Isn’t that a shame”. He went on chart with R&B  covers including “Long Tall Sally” and “Tutti Frutti” (where he did change the lyrics)  as well as his own hits like “April Love” A conservative Christian, he turned down a movie role with Marilyn Monroe, but had his first on-screen kiss with Shirley Jones, after getting permission from his wife. He also wrote an advice book for teens, “Twixt Twelve and Twenty” where he talks about the importance of school, G-rated dating (he suggests bowling or watching his TV show) and spankings (from his parents…what did you think I meant?) Pat parodied his squeaky-clean image in 1997 with the album, “In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy”, a compilation of heavy metal covers featuring him in a leather vest.
